Leadership varies a lot between Vans stores
Pros: Some store managers are genuinely supportive, which makes a big difference for a Retail Associate. You can learn a lot about footwear retail and visual merchandising. There's a decent team atmosphere when leadership is good.
Cons: Leadership quality is super inconsistent across different locations in this corporate retail environment. Some managers don't handle difficult customer situations well, and feedback from the team often feels ignored. It's tough when you feel like you're not heard.
Advice to Management: Invest in consistent leadership training and development across all retail locations. Make sure store managers are empowered to act but also held accountable for team morale and feedback.

Cool Brand, But Job Security Is Shaky
Pros: The Vans brand itself is iconic, which felt stable for a while. Being part of the **footwear industry** was exciting, and there's a good vibe within specific teams. For **product development teams**, the work is often engaging, creating new collections.
Cons: Lately, there's been some corporate restructuring across the board. This made **job security** feel really uncertain, even for experienced people. My role **as an Associate Product Developer** felt vulnerable to these changes and shifts in priorities, which wasn't great.
Advice to Management: Communicate more openly about company strategy and potential impacts on teams. It would help a lot with employee morale and reduce anxiety around job stability. Invest in developing internal talent to build more resilient teams.

Decent Start, Slow Growth in Retail Roles
Pros: It's a really fun brand, and the company culture is pretty laid-back. I've learned a lot about customer service and sales within the apparel retail space, which is good for building foundational skills. There are opportunities for seasonal training on new products and promotions.
Cons: Career growth feels really stagnant beyond a certain point for a Sales Associate. It's tough to move up into corporate retail roles from the Los Angeles store without a college degree or prior office experience. The pay raises aren't very significant even when you do get a small promotion.
Advice to Management: Consider creating more clear pathways and development programs for retail employees to transition into corporate roles. Better incentives and pay bumps for long-term employees in the footwear industry would also improve morale and retention.

Decent for retail, but expect weekend shifts.
Pros: As a Sales Associate in the Santa Monica, CA store, the typical 40-hour weeks are okay. You usually know your schedule a couple weeks out, which helps with planning. It's a pretty social vibe working in the footwear industry.
Cons: Work-life balance can be tough during holiday rushes in this corporate retail environment. Getting consistent weekends off is really hard if you're in retail operations. Scheduling sometimes changes last minute, throwing off personal plans.
Advice to Management: Try to staff better during peak times so associates don't get burnt out. More predictable scheduling for full-timers would be huge for work-life balance.

Pay Is Just Okay, Benefits Are Limited
Pros: The employee discount is a solid perk if you're into their footwear and apparel. For a Sales Associate, scheduling was pretty decent for a retail job. You get some flexibility there.
Cons: Pay isn't super competitive for the retail industry, especially in the Los Angeles area. It's tough to live on these wages. Plus, benefits for part-time staff are really limited; that's a big problem.
Advice to Management: Consider improving the base pay for retail roles, even for Sales Associates. Offering more substantial benefits for part-time employees would also boost morale and retention significantly.

Management needs to step up at times
Pros: Working with the product is awesome for anyone into action sports apparel. The team in our Orange County stores was usually pretty solid and we had fun. It's a cool brand to represent.
Cons: Leadership often felt disconnected from daily store operations. As a Retail Sales Associate, I felt micro-managed on small tasks but lacked guidance on bigger sales goals. There wasn't much support when issues came up with difficult customers.
Advice to Management: Front-line managers need better training on coaching and delegating, not just monitoring. Listen more to the sales team on the floor.

Decent first job for retail experience
Pros: The employee discount is solid, which is great if you love the brand. It's a pretty easy gig to get into if you're looking for your first experience in the retail footwear industry. The team in the Santa Monica, CA store was usually friendly.
Cons: Pay isn't super competitive, and hours can be pretty inconsistent depending on the season. There's not much room to move up from an entry-level Retail Sales Associate role. Management sometimes feels a bit out of touch with floor staff needs.
Advice to Management: Try to offer more consistent schedules and consider better pathways for internal career growth for your dedicated onsite retail staff.
