What is Mass Planning (and Mass Management)?
Our role is to predict the mass of a whole vehicle to support design, test, homologation, and sales groups.
By predicting, and achieving, a vehicle mass target the company can design parts and structures to perform correctly, without over exceeding such that the cost becomes prohibitive to the customer and Nissan.
By managing and maintaining the mass through model life we prevent the need for costly changes.
Mass is key to achieving our emissions targets and to minimise taxation either directly (i.e. French vehicle mass tax) or indirectly from the combined CO2 and other emission taxes. As a company we should be looking to always reduce mass in a cost-effective manner.
What is the Role?
Mass Planning and Management is all about numbers. It is about how much every part on the vehicle weighs; how many of those parts are fitted and what type of part Is fitted. There are up to 3000 parts in any one vehicle, and some stay the same and many change depending on the grade and specification. We:
Work with design groups to benchmark, internally and externally, to identify mass targets and agree then with designers. We develop a knowledge of all areas of the vehicle. We need to be able to understand how parts and systems work so we can identify opportunities for Mass reduction.
Download and collate information regarding mass to build up a full picture of the vehicle.
Create a Mass Table which allows us to predict the masses of all the variants of any model (i.e., Qashqai; Juke; etc.) that could be built and generate reports for many other departments. We use Excel heavily and we generate detailed sub-routines (Visual Basic; Excel formulae; etc) to improve data accuracy and management leading to automated report creation and checking.
Work with the manufacturing sites to get vehicle and parts measured and we compare these with our planning values and investigate anomalies.
Work with Homologation to set the regulation mass; we work with Emissions to set the CO2/range targets; we work with Test departments to set performance criteria.
Need to use good communication skills to explain concerns, negotiate changes and understand reasoned arguments.
Promote Mass awareness within the company.
