Company Summary

Company Reviews

We deliver open source to the world faster, more securely and more cost effectively than any other company.

We're also the publishers of Ubuntu, the world’s most popular enterprise Linux from cloud to edge, together with a passionate global community of 200,000+ contributors.

Ubuntu means 'humanity to others'. We chose it because it embodies the generosity at the heart of open source, the new normal for platforms and innovation.

Together with a community of 200,000, we publish an operating system that runs from the tiny connected devices up to the world's biggest mainframes, the platform that everybody uses on the public cloud, and the workstation experience of the world's most productive developers.

Secure and reliable, elegant and intuitive, and open for innovation - this is the future of open source, which is why we're proud to be the developers of the fastest growing Linux in the world despite already being the most widely deployed.

If you're interested in a career at Canonical, we are a remote-first company so please apply to any suitable role as skills are valued more than location, despite some having a preferred geographic preference.

Pay is decent but benefits could improve.
Pros: The salary for a Software Engineer here is pretty solid, especially for remote work in the open source space. It's competitive with other global tech companies if you're not in a top-tier cost-of-living area. My base pay felt fair.
Cons: Benefits package isn't a strong point, honestly. Don't expect fancy health plans or huge bonuses. It feels more standard, not like the top-tier offerings you see from big tech firms, even for Linux developers.
Advice to Management: Look into improving the global benefits package, especially healthcare and retirement plans. It would help attract and retain top talent for key cloud infrastructure roles.

Decent place for open-source fans, but needs some work
Pros: You get to work on impactful projects, like supporting the Ubuntu Linux distribution. The remote work flexibility is really solid for work-life balance. It's great being able to contribute to the open-source community from home.
Cons: The company culture can feel a bit siloed sometimes. It's hard to get a clear picture of overall direction, especially for us remote employees. Communication from leadership isn't always super transparent.
Advice to Management: Focus on improving internal communication across teams. Try to foster a more connected company culture, especially for the remote staff.

Career Growth is a Bit Stagnant Here
Pros: I've learned a ton about open-source software and Linux distribution development. The remote work setup is genuinely flexible, letting me work from home in Europe without issues. Colleagues are usually smart and dedicated, which is nice.
Cons: Career growth as a Software Engineer feels really slow. There isn't much of a clear path for advancement or promotions. Management can be a bit hands-off, so you often have to advocate hard for new opportunities or skill development.
Advice to Management: Create clearer career ladders and development programs for technical roles. Invest more in employee growth initiatives.
