Leadership is hit or miss here
Pros: Some senior leaders, especially in technical roles, truly know their stuff and will back your projects. As an Optical Engineer, I've had mentors who genuinely helped me grow and offered solid guidance. The push for innovation in laser systems is evident from certain leaders.
Cons: There's a noticeable inconsistency across the bigger corporate structure; some management decisions feel disconnected from the day-to-day work. Communication about company strategy isn't always clear, leaving many wondering about long-term goals for technical teams. This can make the onsite work feel a bit directionless sometimes.
Advice to Management: Focus on developing consistent leadership training across all levels, not just for new managers. Improve communication channels from the top-down so employees understand strategic decisions better. Make sure leaders are visible and accessible.

Decent place, but flexibility could be better for engineers.
Pros: They've got solid benefits and job security in the semiconductor industry. For Process Engineer roles, you learn a ton about advanced materials and manufacturing processes. It's a big, established corporate company, so things are pretty stable here.
Cons: Work flexibility isn't great, especially for us on the production floor in Santa Clara, CA. It's mostly an onsite gig; remote or hybrid options are rare even for non-hands-on tasks. You're expected to be in the office during core hours, which can make personal appointments tough.
Advice to Management: Consider more hybrid options for roles that don't require constant hands-on work. It would definitely help with retention and employee morale.

Pay is decent, benefits are okay
Pros: As an Associate Engineer in the San Jose, CA office, I felt the base salary was pretty competitive for this part of the photonics industry. The health insurance plan is pretty solid, which is a big deal for a big corporate company like Coherent.
Cons: The annual bonus structure isn't very clear and felt pretty small most years. Raises were often minimal, even with good performance reviews, which was a bit frustrating. Dental and vision benefits felt just okay, not great.
Advice to Management: Please make the bonus structure more transparent and impactful. Also, consider enhancing dental and vision benefits to be more competitive with other tech companies in the Silicon Valley area.
