About This Role

CHELPIS is extending its PQC and secure computing capabilities into autonomous and unmanned systems, where AI, autonomous control, edge computing, secure communications, and cybersecurity must operate as one integrated platform.

We are looking for a Director, Autonomous Systems / Head of Autonomy BU to lead this effort.

This role goes beyond engineering management. You will help define the BU’s technology direction, product roadmap, key programs, and organization, turning technical capabilities into products that can be validated, deployed, and scaled.

Responsibilities

1. Define Product and Technology Direction

Lead the mid- to long-term roadmap for the Autonomy BU, integrating embedded/onboard computing, networking and wireless communications, edge computing, vehicle control, robotics, AI perception, sensors, ground control, and secure communications into scalable and product-ready platforms.

Think at the system level and make sound trade-offs across architecture, performance, reliability, security, cost, schedule, and product requirements.

2. Lead Cross-Functional R&D and System Integration

Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering across hardware, firmware, embedded Linux, networking, robotics, AI, sensors, ground systems, and cybersecurity, while establishing clear system interfaces, subsystem ownership, and engineering responsibilities.

Lead through product, program, and cross-functional technical collaboration, coordinating internal and external R&D resources and driving resolution of critical integration and system-level issues.

3. Turn Technology into Products

Work with PM, BD, customers, and technology partners to translate use cases into system requirements, technical milestones, and integration plans, while managing key technical decisions, resources, and engineering risks.

Drive products from prototype and PoC through system integration, engineering validation, field testing, and customer deployment, while turning project knowledge into reusable platform and product capabilities.

4. Build the Autonomy BU Engineering Team

Help shape the engineering organization, capability plan, key hiring priorities, technical ownership, architecture and design review practices, and cross-functional collaboration model.

Work with PQC, cybersecurity, chip, secure communication, and external technology teams to make effective Make / Buy / Partner decisions and build the capabilities CHELPIS should own internally.

As the team grows, progressively assume broader responsibilities for talent development, performance management, resource allocation, and organizational development.

5. Grow from Engineering Leadership into BU Leadership

Beyond engineering delivery, progressively participate in product roadmap, technology investment, workforce and R&D resource planning, strategic customer programs, partnerships, supply-chain strategy, product economics, and development priorities.

The goal is to expand from engineering leadership into broader product, organizational, and business ownership, helping build the Autonomy BU into a scalable and sustainable business.

Qualifications

5+ years of experience in embedded systems, networking, wireless communications, robotics, autonomous systems, defense electronics, aerospace, automotive, edge computing, or related product development.
Proven people-management experience at the Senior Manager / Senior Engineering Manager or equivalent engineering leadership level.
5+ years of engineering or technical team management experience, including hiring, talent development, performance management, and resource planning.
Experience leading cross-functional engineering teams or complex multidisciplinary system / product development.
Strong background in system architecture, system integration, or cross-functional engineering management, beyond ownership of a single technical module.
Experience across prototype, PoC, system integration, engineering validation, field testing, and customer delivery.
Strong troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and technical issue-resolution capabilities.
Strong system-level judgment across technology, product requirements, schedule, cost, risk, and resources.
Strong communication skills with executives, customers, engineering teams, and external technology partners.

Preferred Qualifications

UAV / UAS / UGV / robotics product development or system integration experience.
Experience with MANET, mesh networking, wireless data links, tactical communications, or secure communications.
Experience with Embedded Linux, ARM, Jetson, FPGA, or edge-computing platforms.
Experience with flight / vehicle control, ROS / ROS2, autonomous navigation, sensor fusion, Edge AI, or computer vision.
Experience with cybersecurity, Zero Trust, key management, Secure Boot, or PQC integration.
Defense, government, aerospace, or mission-critical system experience.
Experience taking products from prototype through field deployment, production, or commercialization.
Experience managing 5–15+ engineers or multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Experience with product roadmaps, headcount planning, R&D budgets, technology investment, or resource allocation.
Experience working with ODM/OEM partners, research institutions, technology vendors, strategic partners, or supply chains.
