Solid place, but culture could improve.

I was a Software Engineer at AlgoSec for a few years. It's a pretty stable company in network security. The work itself is interesting. But the company culture felt a bit muted, especially in the Boston office. There wasn't much energy day-to-day.

Pros

My team was great; we worked well together. I got to dive deep into network security policy management. The hybrid work model was also a huge plus. It allowed for good flexibility.

Cons

The company culture itself felt a little quiet. Social events were rare, even in the Boston office. It's not a super high-energy place. Sometimes it felt isolated as a Software Engineer.

Advice to Management

Try to inject more life into the company culture. Organize more team-building activities or social gatherings. It would really help with employee engagement.

Leadership has some good points, some not so much.
Pros: My direct manager was really supportive, which was great. They encouraged learning about new network security policy tools, which helped with my skills. The team culture in the Boston office was pretty solid too.
Cons: Upper management often seems out of touch with what's happening on the ground for engineering and operations. There's a lack of clear vision for future firewall management products, which makes it tough to feel secure about long-term career growth here. Decisions sometimes feel really slow.
Advice to Management: Listen more to the teams working directly with the product and customers. Provide clearer direction on product roadmaps and strategic goals. Improve communication from the top down.

Decent Pay, But Benefits Could Improve
Pros: As a Software Engineer working in network security, the base salary here is pretty solid. We get an annual bonus, which is a nice touch, and the 401k match is okay for a company of this size.
Cons: The health insurance options felt a bit expensive, especially compared to other tech firms in the Boston area. Stock options aren't super competitive, making it tough to feel like you're building long-term wealth here.
Advice to Management: Consider improving the health insurance options and making the equity package more appealing to retain talent, especially for security software engineers.

Work-life balance can be a real struggle here
Pros: For a Software Engineer in the cybersecurity industry, the pay is actually decent. My team in the Boston office is pretty supportive, which helps when things get hectic. We have a solid hybrid work model too.
Cons: Honestly, the work-life balance here isn't great. As a Software Engineer, I'm often putting in 50+ hour weeks, especially around release cycles. It's tough to disconnect, and there's a lot of pressure to be 'always on.'
Advice to Management: Management needs to really look at project timelines and resource allocation. We need clearer boundaries for after-hours work. Give us a break!
