Job Scope

The item and sequence recommendation problems have widespread applications in many domains such as tourism, logistics, e-commerce, among others. For example, applications in tourism involve recommending the next Point-of-Interest (POI) for a user to visit based on a past sequence of POI visits or recommending a sequence of POI visits in the form of an itinerary. This project will focus on enhancing personalised recommendations for individual users (e.g., recommending the best attraction and/or itinerary to a user to optimise his/her satisfaction), while ensuring fairness in terms of resource allocation across the entire population (e.g., allocating visitors across multiple attraction to ensure all attractions are well-utilised). The research fellow is expected to contribute to this project by introducing problem formulations for this problem, designing solutions that jointly consider individual user interests and global fairness in allocation, and collecting and sharing resources to further encourage future work in this area.

Qualifications, Skills, Experience
The requirements for this candidate are:

• A PhD in a relevant field, such as Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing or Data Analytics.
• The candidate must have previous experience and skills in the following: (i) implementing deep learning algorithms, particularly those related to prediction and recommendation tasks; (ii) knowledgeable in working with unstructured text data for classification tasks, such as location detection; (iii) ability to review the current state-of-the-art and implement baseline models; (iv) writing publications and presenting results at leading conferences and journals.
• Strong programming skills in Machine Learning / Deep Learning Python and libraries, such as scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, etc.
• Good to have skills and experiences, include: (i) developing web-based systems for data collection and analysis; (ii) previous experience in working with social media and/or sensor data.
